Meet Zycron’s Leadership Team

Darrell S. Freeman, Executive Managing Director

Darrell founded Zycron, Inc. in 1991. The company has grown to become a leading, Tennessee-based information technology consulting firm, employing more than 350 professionals across the country.

As Zycron’s executive chairman, Darrell provided leadership and direction for all operations of the company. As the Executive Managing Director for the Zycron Division of BG, Darrell remains active and involved in all aspects of the organization.

With Darrell’s leadership, Zycron successfully transitioned from a small company into a burgeoning, highly reputable firm serving Fortune 500 clients and the largest health care, government and utility agencies in the United States. His strong sense about industry trends and timing has enabled Zycron to remain vibrant in an increasingly competitive industry.

He was inducted into the Nashville Entrepreneur Center’s Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in 2014. In addition to Zycron, he is also the co-founder of two other businesses. As co-founder and co-organizer of Tennessee-based Reliant Bank (Commerce Union Bank (NASDAQ)), Darrell serves on the Board of Directors. He is the co-founder and chairman of Pinnacle Construction Partners which provides a full range of preconstruction planning and construction management services for the public and private sector. And he is the Lead Director for American Addiction Centers (NYSE).

Darrell has a long-standing commitment to the community. In 2012, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam appointed him to the Tennessee Board of Regents, and the Memphis City School Board in 2010 presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation for being a dedicated partner and a positive influence in the community. He served two terms as chairman of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and as former chairman of the 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee, he led the organization to achieve chapter of the year in 2005.

Other organizations for which Darrell serves or has served on the board are: Centennial Medical Center, Stone Crest Medical Center, Nashville Community Foundation, the Nashville Downtown Rotary Club, the Federal Reserve Advisory Board, the African American Museum of Music Art and Culture, Middle Tennessee State University Board of Trustees and the Nashville Broadband Task Force.

Darrell is married to Memphis native Gloria Freeman and has four children. He holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University.

Steven Howard Smith, Managing Director

Steven’s leadership experience in the IT consulting industry began in 1986, and has since included responsibility for multimillion-dollar projects in the commercial and government sectors, leading large sales and recruiting teams and opening client doors from Phoenix to Boston

As Zycron’s former President and CEO, Steven worked closely with the executive chairman to establish vision and strategy for the company. Steven continues to work with Darrell managing the Zycron Division of BG.

Prior to his tenure with Zycron, Steven worked with a publicly traded firm for 18 years, performing numerous executive roles including that of Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President of Sales responsible for all revenue generation. He grew revenue from $2 to $125 million. He also formed a State Government Services Division directing efforts with more than 20 state governments.

Steven has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences and has been recognized by the State of Louisiana and the University of Memphis for his speaking ability.

Steven’s experience in leading companies to higher productivity and profits made him ideal for Zycron in its commitment to expansion into other national markets. He now works with the Zycron team to meld the Division’s competencies with those of BG Staffing creating a more powerful offering for Zycron’s current and future clients. Steven and his wife Derri have been married for over 31 years.

Rochelle Taylor, Director of Operations

As director of operations, Rochelle plans, directs and coordinates the overall operational decisions for the Zycron Division. As Zycron’s former VP of Operations, Rochelle continues to work with department heads in the management of daily operations, as well as providing oversight for technical support, R&D, purchasing, administration and human resources across the Zycron Division. She continues to monitor Zycron’s revenue margins for employee productivity and develops guidelines for personnel evaluations, staff advancement and recruitment procedures.

Taylor joined Zycron in 2001. Prior to becoming Zycron’s VP of operations, she served as director of human resources where she led and directed the company’s overall HR strategies, practices and programs.

Prior to Zycron, Taylor worked in the healthcare, state government, and insurance services industries. She is a native of Nashville, Tenn., and is married with three children.

Dennis Waggoner, Vice President of Business Development

Dennis’ role as vice president of business development includes working with company leadership to develop and execute sales strategy, networking and developing new business and key account relationships and working with the sales team to expand business. He also provides strategic direction to Zycron’s entire account management organization.

Previously, Waggoner was the vice president of sales. As VP of sales, he contributed his invaluable experience in managing large client contracts, and he coordinated all recruiting, consulting and project efforts on his accounts. Waggoner was promoted to VP of sales after five years of being on the Zycron sales team. He joined Zycron in 2003 as the sales director responsible for sales planning, strategy, business development and customer service.

Prior to Zycron, he gained experience in the IT industry as a recruiter and account manager at Systems Programming Consultants and Compuware, and as a sales director at Zion. He spent four years in the U.S. Navy, 10 years at the Federal Reserve Bank-Nashville and eight years with various companies in the IT services sector.

A graduate of Goodlettsville High School, Waggoner attended Tennessee Tech University where he played varsity baseball and earned a bachelor’s in business administration with an emphasis in management information systems.

Dennis is married with two children.

Lane Martin, Director of Delivery

Lane has an extensive sales and management background, and has held numerous senior sales management positions throughout his career. Before joining Zycron, Lane was a Senior Healthcare Account Manager with Wipro Technologies, a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company. Lane has also held the positions of Regional Director of Professional Services for Compuware, DPRC and Systems and Programming Consultants (SPC) through consecutive acquisitions. Before entering sales management, Lane spent over 12 years as a systems engineer and software developer, and later as a successful consultant in the Nashville IT market.

Lane earned a BBA in Business Management from Middle Tennessee State University.

Lane’s wife is Melinda and they have two daughters that are also married.
