Today’s job market is ever changing, and it may seem hard to keep up with it. Here are some quick tips to connect the dots and keep you ahead of other candidates.

  1. Do your homework on the company. Has the company made recent news around the job your applying for? Bringing this up during the interview doesn’t just show that you are well connected in areas that matter but will also show your willing to go the extra mile regardless of what it is.
  2. Do your homework on the interviewers. One of the main areas we have seen recent success in is having our candidates making college connections with the folks they are interviewing with. This question is typically not asked on high level interviews, so the candidate needs to be proactive making this connection at some point in the call. Looking at their Linked-In for interests and their past working experience is also a great connection to make if applicable.
  3. Make Connections. The first thing we always have candidates do when getting ready for an interview is to reach out to their network to see if they have ever worked at the company they are interviewing for. If this person did an excellent job and was thought very highly of, the interviewers may even reach out to that person to get a quick reference on you. Of course, you will want to make sure this will be a positive connection before going down this path!
  4. Send a thank you note. In todays IT world, interviewers are often interviewing multiple people for multiple roles. Candidates can easily get lost in the shuffle. One way to make sure your name doesn’t get lost is to send a quick personal note to each interviewer for taking the time to interview you. Not only is it just a nice human gesture, but it will get your name back on top of the interviewer’s head. Keep it short and simple! This note should not include they “whys” to why you’re a good candidate, you just demonstrated that, and it may come off as you are desperate for a role that you might not be 100% qualified for.

A lot of candidates are doing one if not all these things already, make sure to not be behind when interviewing for your dream job!
