Nashville Chamber Chairman, Zycron CEO Darrell Freeman Turns Over Control of His 16-year-old Company to Long-Time IT Consulting Executive
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Zycron, Inc., for the first time in its 16-year history, appointed a new president to lead operations at the international information technology solutions firm. Zycron CEO Darrell Freeman this month appointed Steven Howard Smith to be Zycron’s president.
Smith joined Zycron in July 2007 as executive vice president with more than 21 years of leadership experience in the IT consulting industry. Before joining Zycron, he spent 18 years with SCB Computer Technology, Inc. where he served as the executive vice president of sales and recruiting. He led SCB from a $2 million revenue company to more than $140 million. When SCB was purchased by CIBER in 2004, Smith served as the transition officer spending two years with the billion-dollar industry leader. And he was vice president of government services at GDH Consulting, a Midwestern IT firm.
“Zycron has achieved tremendous success because of its ability to adopt positive changes as well as capitalize on the talents of its leaders,” Freeman said. “Steven’s comprehensive knowledge of the IT consulting industry, coupled with his exemplary character, will undoubtedly take Zycron to unprecedented heights.”
Prior to entering IT consulting, Smith worked as a counselor in West Tennessee schools. While working in the school system, he developed and implemented a job training program for economically disadvantaged youth across the state of Tennessee.
“Steven’s private sector success, combined with his public sector service, provide a rare mixture of professional experience,” Freeman said.
Zycron is the largest IT services and solutions firm based in Middle Tennessee with offices across the state and in Dallas. Freeman founded the company in Nashville, Tenn., in 1991, and it has since become the state’s largest minority-owned IT staffing agency with business dealings nationwide and overseas. For the last 16 years Zycron has been an award-winning leader in the IT industry, and serves as a primary vendor for many of Tennessee’s powerhouse companies such as Tennessee Valley Authority, Hospital Corporation of America, FedEx, Memphis Light Gas & Water utility company, and Nashville Electric Service.
Among other successes, Zycron has received honors such as: Regional Minority Supplier of the Year; Mid-South Minority Business of the Year; Business Journal Future 50; and Top 100 Inner City Company.
Smith will be charged with expanding the company’s revenues as well as expanding its clientele across the country. His daily responsibilities will include achieving profitability targets, working with the CEO to develop and implement strategies for improving overall operational performance, and leading key sales campaigns with existing and prospective clients.
